Queen of the South 3 Airdrie 2: Diamonds weren't at the races, says Callum Fordyce as side slump to third defeat in four games

Airdrie player-assistant boss Callum Fordyce admits his side didn't deserve anything from their trip to Dumfries as Queen of the South denied them the chance to move back into the promotion play-off spots in League One.

The defender felt his side were way off it at Palmerston as goals from Euan East, Lewis Gibson and Kieran McKechnie did the damage in a 3-2 victory.

And Fordyce confessed even though the Diamonds brought it back to 2-1 and then 3-2 after second half strikes from Gabby McGill and Calum Gallagher, they never looked like taking something from the game.

Fordyce, whose side remain two points off the top four after a third defeat in four games, said: "We weren't really at the races. I think in the first 15 minutes we started better and had a couple of chances.

"I should score from a header and they made a couple of saves.

"They score with their first real attack. The boys are saying there was a wee block [in the build-up] but we're just not streetwise enough there.

"We conceded another poor goal from a cross and the game just fizzled out, if I am honest.

"I thought Queens were a bit better in the first half, moved the ball well, and we just couldn't get to grips with it.

"We tweaked a couple of things at half-time. Obviously, we got the goal and I thought we were on the front foot and I thought we were coming back into the game.

"They scored a goal against the run of play I think, and that just deflated the game.

"We were on the ascendancy, we were creating more chances, putting them under a bit of pressure and you felt the game sway [in Airdrie's favour] a wee bit.

"But they score from us not clearing our lines. It's another poor goal from us to concede and the game just died out after that, even though we got a second goal back.

"We just didn't create too many chances after that.

"Fair play to them because once we got our second goal, they changed their shape and saw the game out professionally.

"Overall, I don't think we deserved much from the game. Queens were better throughout the 90 minutes."

The Diamonds were dealt a blow on the hour mark when player-boss Rhys McCabe was forced off with a hamstring issue, with him being replaced by Dean McMaster after an hour.

And Fordyce says it's too early to determine if he will be fit for next week's clash at home to Kelty Hearts.

"I can't actually tell you too much more about it at the moment," he said.

"I think his hamstring was feeling a bit tight, so you can't take a risk with that, with the end of the season coming up.

"The boys who came on did well. Dean and Justin [Devenny] are just young boys but they showed a wee bit of enthusiasm and a bit of energy, which kick-started us a wee bit.

"But it shouldn't take us 70 minutes for that to happen.

"We weren't deserving of anything."
