Queen star Brian May issued a damning assessment of departing Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a lengthy post on Instagram on Thursday.
The guitar legend described Johnson's three year premiership as 'shamefully inept' and Britain's exit from the European Union a 'great lie'.
The veteran rocker went on to express his hopes that the next leader would prove to be someone with "decency, dignity and wisdom".
Writing on to the social media platform, the 74-year-old said in full: "We rejoice in the resignation of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister of Britain. It's a suitably ignominious end to a shamefully inept period of office.
"It's fitting that it's his lies that brought his reign to an end - since it was lies that brought him into power. The great lie that Brexit would magically empower Britain, along with his failure to show leadership in his response to the Covid pandemic, have left the people of the UK despondent and economically crippled.
"His speech on departure was so typical of the inveterate liar who actually believes his own distorted version of the truth. Instead of the humble apology he should have delivered to the Nation for the inexcusable behaviour which led even his own party to disown him, his arrogance led him into an attempt to rewrite history, painting himself as a glorious high achiever. All a kind of Trumpian fantasy."
He continued: "And so now the only question is can the Tory party come up with a new leader who actually has decency, dignity and wisdom? Amidst the happiness generated by Boris's removal, I sense a small shudder in the nation. Bri."
Within seven hours, May's rant had received more than 27,000 likes and 1,000 replies, the majority of which were in agreement.
One fan commented: "I rejoice in his resignation too. His speech earlier today was a complete embarrassment to the country as a whole.
"He didn't have the common courtesy to say he was sorry. To actually brag about getting us out of the pandemic when he locked us down far too late shows how totally inept he really was. And don't get me started on Brexit.
"Unfortunately we still have a Tory government but let's hope the new PM actually believes in themselves by putting the "great" back into Britain. Bye Boris. We won't miss you."
Another wrote: "You certainly don't mince words, Dr. May— and Boris deserves every one of these. Britain is going to take a long time to recover from the damage he and his party have done, just as the US will from our prior incompetent leader. My optimism about finding a head of state who has (common) decency, dignity, and wisdom has long given way to cynicism."
A third added: "Well said. Good riddance to bad rubbish. As you rightly said he didn't even have the decency to acknowledge any mistakes he may have made, just peppered it with tales of how great he and the Party have supposedly been in power. Great indeed. The country is the worst it's been in my lifetime, and probably far beyond."
No stranger to political opinion, May recently described the government's policy of sending refugees to Rwanda as 'despicable'.
