The Queen has congratulated the England women's football team for winning the European Championships and says their success 'goes far beyond' winning the trophy.
Goals from Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly earned England a 2-1 win over Germany after extra-time in the European final with the winning goal coming with just 11 minutes left on the clock. The Wembley showcase was watched by a record-breaking attendance of 87,192 people, while the overall attendance for the UK based competition was 574,875.
It is England's first major international football honour since the men's team won the 1966 World Cup, and the Queen was quick to congratulate the winning side. Millions of people tuned in to watch England win the tournament and the monarch said the Lionesses have been an inspiration to young girls and women.

"My warmest congratulations, and those of my family, go to you all on winning the European Women's Football Championships," a statement from the Queen said.
"It is a significant achievement for the entire team, including your support staff. The Championships and your performance in them have rightly won praise. However, your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned.
"You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations. It is my hope that you will be as proud of the impact you have had on your sport as you are of the result today."
The England women's team will be celebrating their victory at a fan celebration in Trafalgar Square tomorrow (Monday).
Up to 7,000 fans will have the chance to attend the free event starting from 11am when England head coach Sarina Wiegman will be attending to perform a trophy lift.
