Queen Elizabeth's London coffin procession for lying in state - start time, route, viewing areas and how to watch

The late Queen's coffin will be moved from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Palace for the lying in state.

The procession will begin from Buckingham Palace at 2:22pm on Wednesday, September 14. The Queen will Lie-in-State at the Palace of Westminster until Monday, September 19, and members of the public may visit to pay their respects.

Warnings and guidance has been issued by the government on how members of the public can attend, how to watch on TV, and what items they can and cannot bring. Large crowds are expected to gather to attend the procession, and stewards will be placed by viewing areas and along the route to direct people.

What time does it start?

The procession will begin from Buckingham Palace at 2:22pm on Wednesday 14 September. Viewing areas along the route will open at 11am.

What route will Queen's coffin procession take?

The procession will travel along The Mall, Horse Guards Road, across Horse Guards Parade and onto Whitehall to Parliament Square and into the Palace of Westminster. The government is expected to release a map detailing the exact route today.

How can I watch the procession in person?

Ceremonial viewing areas have been established along the route for members of the public. The viewing areas will open at 11am on 14 September, and capacity will be limited and people will be admitted in order of arrival time.

However, the government have asked people not to camp in advance, and any who do may be asked to move. If the viewing area you intend to visit is full when you arrive, you will be directed to the screening site in Hyde Park where the ceremonial procession will be shown on large screens.

Where are all the viewing areas?

The viewing areas along the procession route are the Green Park side of The Mall, St James’s Park side of The Mall and Horse Guards Road, Horse Guards Parade ground, Whitehall (West), Parliament Street (West), and Great George Street, Whitehall (East), Parliament Street (East), and Bridge Street.

What if I have accessibility requirements?

There will be dedicated positions for people with accessibility requirements at the Green Park side of The Mall, and the St James’s Park side of The Mall. There is also a dedicated area for people with accessibility requirements at the Parade Ground in Hyde Park for the Hyde Park screening of the procession.

All the viewing areas are on one level, and people using these areas can be accompanied by one carer. Accessible viewing spaces are limited, and people will be admitted in order of arrival time.

How can I watch the procession on TV?

All processions and services will be broadcast on national television and radio.

What can I bring?

At the procession viewing areas and the screening sites, there will be first aid facilities, toilets and concession kiosks where you can buy light refreshments, but you may bring your own food and drink as concession kiosks will be limited.

It is prohibited to bring alcohol or drinking glasses, tents, camping equipment, gazebos, or barbecues and equipment for fires.
