Queen Elizabeth II has died age 96, Royal Family confirms in statement

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at the age of 96.

The Royal Family has confirmed the news, writing on their official website: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Queen Elizabeth II ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history, having ascended to the throne in 1952.

Her Majesty, who turned 95 in 2021, sprained her back in November and was undergoing 'a period of rest', and at the time it was announced that she may not 'be seen until February 2022' as a result.

Queen Elizabeth II had also been forced to spend the night at the King Edward VII in Marylebone in October 2021 to undergo “preliminary investigations” for an unknown condition unrelated to her sprained back.

The Queen's passing follows that of her husband's, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away in April 2021 at the age of 99.

The Queen carried out all of her duties against the 'backdrop of a full personal life' which saw her raise four children and welcome grandchildren and great-grandchildren to the Royal Family.
