Queen Elizabeth II funeral: All the services closed in Glasgow on national day of mourning

The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II will take place on Monday, September 19 after the monarch's death at the age of 96 on Thursday.

It has been confirmed that an additional public holiday has been put in place for the state funeral for a national day of mourning.

Glasgow City Council confirmed that most services would be closed on Monday with only "essential services" remaining operational.

A statement from the location authority reads: "On Monday 19 September 2022 the State Funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II will take place. An additional Public Holiday has been granted for a day of National Mourning.

"On this day, we will continue to provide the essential services required to support our most vulnerable citizens and to keep our city mobile, clean and safe.

"All other services, including schools and nurseries, will be closed as a mark of respect on this day of National Mourning."

These are some of the key services that will be closed on the day of the funeral:

Schools

As confirmed by Glasgow City Council, schools and nurseries will be closed

Surrounding areas including East Renfrewshire have also confirmed schools with be closed on September 19.

Royal Mail

All Royal Mail services will be suspended across the country.

Meanwhile, the 114 Post Office branches run by the service will close on the day of the funeral while others run by the likes of WH Smith, Tesco, Co-Op and Spar are also likely to close.

Bin collections

Glasgow bin collections will be suspended next week due to the Queen's funeral and bank holiday.

Glasgow City Council has said that essential services will continue on Monday but other services will close. While cleansing operations for parks and street bins will go ahead as planned, there will be no domestic pick-ups.

A spokesman said: “Household bin collections will not go ahead as scheduled on the 19th. We are currently working on plans to minimise the impact on residents and further information will be shared as soon as it is available.”

Shops

The majority of major stores and supermarkets will be closed for the national day of mourning.

For supermarket chains, these include Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, M&S, Iceland, Co-op, Lidl and Aldi.

Other stores closing their doors are B&Q, Argos, Homebase, Ikea, Poundland, Primark, WH Smith, Dunelm and John Lewis.

Buchanan Galleries will also observe bank holiday opening times but said shops will make their own decision on whether to open.

Museums

The majority of museums and public gardens will be closed for the funeral, including the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the National Trust for Scotland has confirmed their buildings and gardens will be closed .

Cinemas

Most cinemas will also be shut during the Queen's funeral, including major organisations Odeon and Cineworld.

NHS hospital appointments

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has said that plans are being put in place to ensure scheduled appointments can continue as planned 'wherever possible'.

The announcement comes after NHS hospitals in England said they would be forced to postpone outpatient appointments and planned operations due to reduced staffing. Most GP surgeries down south are also expected to close for the public holiday.

A spokesperson for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: "The announcement that Monday 19 September will be the state funeral of Her Majesty the Queen, and as such, a bank holiday, NHSGGC is currently putting plans in place so that scheduled appointments can continue as planned wherever possible.

"As plans progress in the coming days, we will publish any further relevant guidance and patient information via our website and social media channels."

Funerals

Glasgow City Council have stated that any funerals already confirmed with the council’s bereavement services for Monday, September 19 will go ahead as scheduled.

The statement followed concerns on social media, as The National Association of Funeral Directors stated: "Some funerals will go ahead, others are moving to a different date - led by the needs and wishes of the bereaved families involved."
