They are a seasonal go-to for many chocoholics during the festive period, but this year's box of Quality Street chocolates might look a little different.
The UK confectionary giant has announced it will be ditching its famous shiny plastic wrappers in a bid to make them more eco-friendly and easy to recycle.
It will be the first time in 86 years that the popular chocolates will no longer feature the iconic shiny, see-through foil that we have all come to know and love. Instead, chocolate lovers will now find favourites such as the Orange Creme and the Purple One wrapped in a wax paper packet, reports LeicestershireLive.
Chocolate historian Alex Hutchinson said: “It’s a huge deal. And it’s a bit sad. Because when Harold Mackintosh originally launched Quality Street he specifically designed it to be an explosion of colour, different flavours, different shapes. The wrapping was absolutely key.”
The Nestle-owned brand - which has been delighting fans since 1936 - has said the change will not happen all at once, but will take place over a few months.
It will see new tubs of Quality Street feature a mixture of different old and new wrappers, as only 9 out of the 11 will be changing - as the Orange Crunch and Green Triangle are set to remain the same.
Nestle’s head of sustainability Cheryl Allen said: “Quality Street is a brand that people feel very strongly about. We know that opening the lid and seeing ‘the jewels’, as we call them, is really important.
“We think we’ve done a really good job with the redesign, and feel confident that people will respond positively.”
