'Quadruple in sight' - National media react to Liverpool Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea

Liverpool lifted their first piece of silverware for the season on Sunday evening after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

Neither side were able to break the deadlock inside the 90 minutes and extra-time but the penalties were calmly taken as all 11 players from both teams were required to step up.

Caoimhin Kelleher slotted his home before fellow goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga fired his over the bar at the Liverpool end as Wembley erupted.

And here is what the national media - plus our own Paul Gorst - made of the Reds' record-breaking ninth League Cup win and the hopes for the rest of the campaign.

Wembley belonged to Liverpool again

Henry Winter, The Times

"A decade has elapsed since they last celebrated a trophy here but Wembley belonged to Liverpool again. Anfield South has reopened.

"Liverpool have won bigger trophies but this one felt so important because of the manner in which it was achieved: a tense penalty shoot-out of exacting standards, after one of the most gripping finals of recent times, and against opposition of the calibre of European champions.

"No wonder they celebrated like this. Liverpool are in contention for three other trophies of greater lustre but they fought hard for this and revelled in getting their hands on the cup."

In the mood to attack the rest of the season

Dominic King, The Daily Mail

"This Liverpool squad is full of outstanding players connected by a desire to collect as much silverware as possible. They have recognised the haul that they have collected so far under Jurgen Klopp does not reflect their talents.

"It is why there was so much riding on the outcome of the Carabao Cup final. A loss to Chelsea could have punctured the momentum they have spent two months building and would have seen dreams of a Quadruple disintegrate at the first hurdle.

"All this underlined that this squad is in the mood to attack the rest of the season, knowing they may never get such an opportunity again.

"History tells you a clean sweep is impossible but what will give Klopp hope is the fact every member of his squad is contributing."

Diaz has hit the ground sprinting

Chris Bascombe, The Telegraph

"Never let it be said that Luis Diaz hit the ground running when he signed for Liverpool. He hit the ground sprinting.

"These remain thrilling early days for the Colombian. N evertheless, his cup final performance underlined what Premier League defenders know. He is a nightmare to deal with.

"The greatest tribute to the £37million signing is that he was more dynamic than his senior partners Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

"Without him, and given the warm-up injury to Thiago Alcantara, it is conceivable Liverpool would have come up short against Chelsea’s strength in depth.

"Now, Liverpool even match that. They are underachievers no more, and there is more to come for this Liverpool team."

A truly unprecedented quadruple is still in sight

Paul Gorst, Liverpool Echo

"Even for Jurgen Klopp, the manager of what must now be considered the best Liverpool side since at least the 1980s, this was the breaking of new ground at Wembley.

"This competition started, unashamedly, as the lowest priority when the action got underway way back in September, and while this record-setting triumph now takes them one clear of Manchester City, the club's ninth League Cup may yet be remembered in the wider context of a far, far grander achievement.

"There's a lot of football to be played before that tantalising prospect is a reality, but the naked fact that a truly unprecedented quadruple is still in sight at the start of March will whet the appetite for what could genuinely be halcyon days, even at this most storied of football clubs.

"Liverpool have never won the League Cup, FA Cup, the domestic title and European Cup in the same year, but having seen off Chelsea here at Wembley, that gigantic, almost laughably impossible task now stands in front of them, within the grasp of the best collection of footballers in decades on Merseyside."
