QPR target nets stunning winner for Albion Rovers in Edinburgh City clash that was 'worthy of winning any game'

Albion Rovers Brian Reid insists Kyle Doherty's winner against Edinburgh City was worthy of winning any game as the QPR target netted a stunning goal last night.

Doherty - who is set for a second trial with the English Championship side - rifled home a late 20-yard strike into the top corner to earn Rovers a vital 2-1 victory at Ainslie Park, after City striker John Robertson had responded quickly to cancel out Michael Travis' own-goal opener in 72 minutes.

It's the fourth time Rovers have gotten the better of City this season with three League Two wins and a penalty shootout triumph in the Betfred League Cup under their belt.

And boss Reid was delighted with the finish from Doherty, which helped Rovers climb to eighth in the table and nine points clear of bottom side Cowdenbeath.

He said: "It was disappointing to go ahead and then lose a goal so quickly, but Doc's goal was a fitting one to win any game.

"It was a top quality finish from him.

"We'd hit the post just before that when their keeper made a great save to tip an effort from Declan [Byrne] onto the post.

"But Doc's scored a great goal. They don't get saved when you rifle it into the postage stamp and we were delighted to see it hit the back of the net.

"We deserved the three points and it was a good night all in.

"I thought we played well last night.

"We were a wee disappointed with how we played in the first half because we got into a lot of good positions in the final third, but our decision making was a wee bit off.

"We went in 0-0 but we were never really in any great trouble, and were in control for much of the half.

"In the second half we worked really hard and got an own goal, so that was nice to see us get a wee rub of the green for a change.

"It's an important win and we just need to focus on ourselves."

Doherty took his tally for the season to eight goals in 25 appearances and his performances earlier in the season earned hima trial with QPR.

An injury just before Christmas threatened to derail any hopes of a big move, but the London club remain keen on the player and Doherty has stated he expects to go back down south for a second chance this month.

Asked about the situation, Reid said: "QPR are still interested. But we've got a small squad and we need all our players at the moment.

"It needs to work with our needs because we've got midweek games and we'll need him for them.

"That's the situation as it is right now."

For Reid and Rovers, attention now turns to Saturday's league clash at Stirling Albion.

A win at Forthbank would see Rovers leapfrog their rivals in the table, but with Storm Dudley hitting the country and snow forecast on Friday that clash could be in doubt.

Reid said: "We've already got a couple of games to catch-up so we could do without any more to add to that.

"But with the climate in this country, the grass pitches are taking a hammering at the moment.

"The Stirling game might be in doubt, but Stirling's pitch is one of the good ones. With amount of rain that's fallen and with the forecast not looking great we'll need to see how it goes, but we'll prepare as normal.

"It's a big game for us on Saturday. We are two points behind Stirling with a game in hand and if we can win that one we'd be in a good position."
