QPR hope to keep Michael Beale as Rangers turn attention to former Steven Gerrard assistant

QPR manager Michael Beale is the favourite for the Rangers job after the Scottish club sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Six months after guiding Rangers to the Europa League Final, Van Bronckhorst was dismissed yesterday following a disappointing start to the season.

Beale was assistant to Steven Gerrard at Rangers and QPR director of football Les Ferdinand has said he will not stand in his way if he wants to return to Ibrox.

But QPR have not yet received an official approach from Rangers for Beale, who turned down the Wolves job last month to stay at Loftus Road.

QPR slipped to seventh in the Championship with three straight defeats before the break for the World Cup but they are targeting promotion and hope Beale will stay.

Ferdinand said: “I expected Michael’s name would be mentioned for the role at Rangers because he did such a good job while he was up there working with Steven Gerrard.

“I don’t want to have to fight to keep anyone at QPR. I want people who want to be here. That’s the only way we can move forward.

“If they want to be somewhere else, that’s what they’re going to do. We’d have to have a conversation. It’s not that I’d be happy to have it but I only want people at the football club who want to be here.”
