A man wanted over the suspected abduction of children from a home in north Queensland has been arrested after five days on the run.

The children, aged three, four, seven and eight, were taken from an address at The Leap near Mackay about 11.30am on Thursday.

Police feared the children were at significant risk and issued an amber alert before they were returned home unharmed on Friday.

A 28-year-old man linked to the missing children was arrested at a property at The Leap on Tuesday.

The man has been refused bail on charges of contravening a domestic violence order and possessing a dangerous drug.

He will face Mackay Magistrates Court on August 17.
