A man remains in custody after appearing in court today charged with the attempted murder of a police officer at Murwillumbah on the NSW far north coast.
It is alleged the male sergeant's head was held underwater as he scuffled with a man near a creek yesterday afternoon.
The officer from Tweed-Byron Police District was patrolling Wentworth Street at Murwillumbah when he noticed a man walking with an injured woman.
He stopped to check on the woman's welfare and also conducted checks on the man, which allegedly revealed he had an outstanding warrant.
It is alleged the 33-year-old Queensland man ran towards a nearby creek, where a struggle ensued.
Police have praised the efforts of a member of the public who intervened and helped to restrain the alleged offender.
The sergeant was taken to Murwillumbah Hospital with water in his lungs.
He has since been released from the hospital to recover at home.
Ronald Charles Canning faced a charge of attempted murder when he appeared before the Tweed Heads Local Court today.
Bail was not applied for and was formally refused.
