A 36-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly set a woman on fire in Kingston, Queensland.
On January 18, at about 7.45am, emergency services were alerted to an address at Kingston Court, where they discovered a 34-year-old woman with burns to her lower body.
The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics and was then transported to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A man was also taken into custody and has since been charged with one count each of attempted murder, common assault, and breach of domestic violence.
Police have alleged that the man and woman were involved in an altercation. Police further alleged that the man produced a lighter during the altercation, and lit the woman on fire.
At the time of writing, the woman remains in hospital with “life-threatening burns so severe she has been unable to speak to police”, 9News reports.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli thanked first responders and sent his “thoughts and prayers” to those affected by the alleged murder attempt.
“To everyone, to her family, to her neighbours, to the first responders, to every Queenslander: these are the kind of incidents that rock communities, and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved,” he told reporters, per The Guardian Australia.
The man is expected to appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday, January 20. Police have opposed the man’s bail.
