MANILA, Philippines - The PetroGazz Angels cruised to their first Premier Volleyball League (PVL) finals with a semifinal sweep of the Banko Perlas Spikers.
The league's No. 1 seed took Game 2 of the best-of-three series in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17, over last year's 2nd runner-up on Saturday, July 6, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Wilma Salas, who has made PetroGazz a contender since her arrival, led the Angels with 23 points off 21 attacks and 2 blocks.
The Angels will face the winner of the semis matchup between the Creamline Cool Smashers and the Pacifictown Army Lady Troopers, where the defending champions lead the series, 1-0.
After narrowly edging out Banko Perlas in the opening set, the Angels rode on their winning momentum to easily take a 2-0 match advantage.
The Perlas Spikers managed to keep the score even early in the 3rd set, 9-9, but PetroGazz pulled away with a massive 7-1 run that brought it to the cusp of a Finals berth.
Salas' offspeed attack later sealed the win as a reception error from Banko Perlas cost the Spikers a chance to keep the match alive - Rappler.com
