The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Montreal Canadiens 9-2 on Thursday, December 12, 2024. A nine-goal NHL game is rare. The Penguins have not scored that many goals in a game since November 4, 2023, when they put up 10 against the San Jose Sharks in a 10-2 win.

The 2024-2025 Pittsburgh Penguins are 13-14-4. Scoring a lot of goals is not what has gotten them their wins. Factoring in the nine-goal game, the team still averages just three goals per game.
Could this be a defining point in the season that indicates more offense is coming? In their last three wins before Thursday, the Penguins scored five goals two times and six goals once.
Penguins fans have struggled to get excited about this seventh-place team.
What Sidney Crosby Said About The Nine Goals
Sidney Crosby said the final score looked more one-sided than it was because the Penguins scored six goals in the third period. He said: “The score looks the way it is but for the most of the game, it was pretty close. Made some good saves in the second period, easily could have tied it or went ahead. We just have to continue to get better and do the right things similar to what we have been doing since the last chunk of time.”
Crosby continues to crush NHL records, and Thursday night was no exception. His three assists against the Canadiens put him ahead of Gordie Howe with the most assists for one franchise. Crosby is now in fifth place, seven behind former teammate Mario Lemieux.
