Putin’s police arrest half-naked ‘assassin' after submarine captain shot on morning run

An alleged assassin suspected of shooting a Russian captain was arrested by Vladimir Putin's police while cowering half naked on a kitchen floor.

Sergei Denisenko, 64, is suspected of murdering submarine captain Stanislav Rzhitsky, 42, in Krasnodar.

Denisenko was seen cowering on a kitchen floor in his underwear after heavily armed Russian security forces stormed a house in Tuapse, Krasnodar region, smashing the windows.

A pistol and silencer were reportedly found in his possession, along with cash.

Rzhitskiy was shot on his morning run after reportedly being hunted down with a fitness tracker app.

Ukrainian-born Denisenko is believed to be a karate teacher, and to have Ukrainian connections.

The committee said: “A man suspected of murdering Stanislav Rzhitsky…was detained in the Krasnodar region.”

He was being interrogated as a “suspect”.

“During the arrest, Denisenko was found to have a pistol with a silencer, from which, presumably, the crime was committed.”

The "motive for the murder is being established”.

Denisenko is an “honoured master of support” who travelled in Russia and Ukraine.

It comes days after the 500 day milestone since the start of Russia's aggression in Ukraine.

The milestone is a grim one in a conflict raging with no end in sight. Intense battles continued on Saturday in the country's east and south as Ukrainian forces pressed their attacks on Russian defences.

While the fighting had fallen largely into a stalemate, Ukraine’s government and its Western supporters hope a broad counteroffensive launched last month will start to see battle lines shifting.

The UN’s Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) confirmed on Friday that 9,000 civilians had been killed so far in the conflict. The mission warned that the actual toll is likely to be far higher than the number of officially confirmed deaths.

HRMMU also said that three times as many civilians were killed in the last 500 days compared with the entire previous eight years of hostilities in eastern Ukraine.
