Putin critic Alexei Navalny pictured for first time with family after Novichok poisoning

This is the first photo of Putin critic Alexei Navalny after he was poisoned by Novichok in a suspected assassination attempt.

Navalny is seen sitting up in his Berlin hospital bed surrounded by his smiling family - wife Yulia, 44, daughter Daria, 19, and son Zakhar, 12.

It is the first time he has been pictured since the poisoning and the photo comes 26 days after he fell ill in Russia.

"I still can hardly do anything, but yesterday I was able to breathe all day on my own all day through,” Navalny said.

“All by myself. I did not use any outside help, not even the simplest valve in my throat.

“I liked it very much. An amazing, underestimated by many process. I recommend it.”

Berlin doctors earlier reported that he had been disconnected from a ventilator and was able to get out of bed on his own.

Navalny, 44, was poisoned on 20 August and became ill on a plane from Tomsk to Moscow which made an emergency landing in Omsk.

The German government yesterday said scientists in France and Sweden have confirmed that Russian opposition leader Navalny was poisoned with novichok.

Special labs in Sweden and France have confirmed the initial results from Germany, government spokesman Steffen Seibert said in a statement.

"We renew the call for Russia to explain itself on the events. We are in close contact with our European partners on further steps," he added.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has previously said that Navalny was the victim of an “attempted murder by poisoning” and the aim was to silence him.

The Russian dissident is receiving treatment in Germany after he fell into a coma.
