Put Celtic and Rangers defeats behind us by beating Aberdeen, says Well No.2

Brian Kerr has urged Motherwell to put recent defeats against Celtic and Rangers behind them by beating Aberdeen tomorrow.

The Fir Park No.2 wants to create a ‘fortress’ atmosphere and give fans something to shout about in home games.

And while he knows a challenging month has been quite bruising for the Steelmen, with just one win in the five games in October, Kerr hopes they come out the other side in a good position.

Jim Goodwin brings his Dons side to Fir Park tomorrow for a clash that will see the introduction of VAR, before Motherwell close the month against Dundee United at Tannadice seven days later.

Kerr said: “It’s a big game. They’ve had two good results this week, but we want to make this a tough place to come and we need to make sure that, come Saturday we win the game, that’s the most important thing.

“We want to get the fans here, we want to get them behind us, we want to put on a good performance and get the three points.

“We want to put the two defeats this week to bed and make sure we get back to winning in the league.

“The home games have been Celtic and Rangers, we’ve had Hibs away and whatnot, so it has been a tough run.

“We knew that, we saw it early in the fixtures and that this batch of fixtures was going to be tough.

Kerr says their 4-0 Premier Sports Cup quarter-final defeat against Celtic on Wednesday was a sore point, but the champions were on top form (SNS Group)

“But that’s just what comes with the job, it comes with the territory. We know what’s going to happen over the course of the season.

“We need to make sure we come out the other side of this in a good place.”

That one victory was a 5-0 humbling of Ross County in Dingwall, and Kerr is confident his side can get back to winning ways, following a 4-0 Premier Sports Cup quarter-final defeat to Celtic.

“The atmosphere is good,” he said. “I don’t think we could ever get down about losing to Celtic, especially with the way they played the other night.

“At any time you need to hope you get them on probably a bad day, unfortunately we didn’t, and they punished the mistakes that we did.

“There have been great moments over the last few weeks – especially when you think that only two weeks ago we went up to Ross County and scored five goals.

“We have to take these positive. We’ve lost to Rangers and Celtic this week and there’s certainly no doom and gloom in here.

“We know we’ve got to be better in both boxes, that’s the main aim here. We need to show more conviction in the final third, and take away any small mistakes that have caused us any problems over the last couple of weeks.

“That’s important, we’ll work on that, but in terms of what we’re trying to do, back to front, we feel we’re in a good place.”

With a vital 3-2 win over Aberdeen on August 13, Kerr admits Motherwell will look at that Pittodrie triumph for inspiration ahead of tomorrow’s clash.

He said: “They’re looking forward to Saturday, we’re looking forward to Saturday, and you can argue about tiredness and stuff, but it also gives you the opportunity in only two days to go and put it right, and that’s the way we look at it.

“We’ll work on the things we felt went well [in the win at Aberdeen] and any things that didn’t go so well we’ll tidy up, but we’ll have a game-plan come Saturday that hopefully gives us the three points.”
