THE police pursuit was fleeting, lasting only 36 seconds before Brett Holden lost control of his car and careered into the corner of a building on Hunter Street.
He then jumped from the car and fled on foot, brandishing his fists and challenging pursuing police to a fight with shouts of "come on" before biting a cop on the finger.
While he was being wrestled to the ground and arrested, other police were searching the boot of the crashed Honda Civic where they found a sawn-off shotgun and an imitation Glock-style gel blaster.
Holden appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday via audio visual link from jail where he pleaded guilty to a number of offences, including police pursuit, assaulting police causing actual bodily harm and firearm offences.
He will next appear in Newcastle District Court next month to get a sentence date.
According to an agreed statement of facts, Holden's issues with police began with a domestic violence-related incident, during which he smashed the window of his girlfriend's car at Cooks Hill on February 3 this year.
Police went and arrested Holden and he made full admissions to causing the damage.
It was five days later when police saw Holden's girlfriend in Newcastle West and spotted Holden driving past and calling out.
He came back a short time later, called for his girlfriend to get in the car, before promptly accelerating away again, this time leading a number of police cars on a short pursuit around Newcastle West before he tried to turn right into Florence Street and crashed into the corner of an office building.
The pursuit lasted 36 seconds, police said.
Holden then jumped from the car and fled on foot towards Hannell Street in Wickham.
Police gave chase and Holden turned around and began to size up the officers, brandishing his fists and saying "come on".
He was hit with a blast of capsicum spray, swung at a police officer and then was tackled to the ground where he bit a police officer on the finger.
He was arrested and police searched the crashed Civic and found the firearms.
