Purdue’s Kicking Woes Magnified by Fan Who Booted 40-Yard Field Goal in Promo Contest

Saturday's game between Purdue and No. 3 Ohio State was only available on Peacock, and for fans of the Boilermakers, that was probably for the best.

Purdue attempted three field goals through three quarters against the Buckeyes. It did not go great.

Kicker Julio Macias’s first was a missed 48-yard attempt on the Boilermakers first possession of the day. The second was a miss from 39 yards out just before halftime. And the third was a 27-yard miss after Purdue was stuffed in the red zone.

It was a tough day for the redshirt freshman, who was starting in place of regular kicker Ben Freehill, who has not played since Purdue's third game of the year due to injury.

Adding insult to injury, people following the game closely noted that during a break, a Purdue fan had taken the field for a field goal contest, and had hit three kicks out of four including one from 40 yards out to win a car lease.

Fans watching at home were sympathetic for Macias, but also ready to make a change to the Boilermakers' special teams unit.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Purdue finally found the end zone to cut Ohio State’s lead to 34–6.

Rather than run Macias out for another kick, the Boilermakers turned to their next backup on the depth chart, Caleb Krockover, on the extra point attempt. Krockover had previously been responsible for Purdue’s kickoffs.

Krockover split the uprights to make it 34–7.
