Pupils warned not to put on weight during Chinese New Year celebrations

A school in China has threatened its pupils with forced exercise if they put on too much weight over the New Year holidays.

Pupils aged 13-14 at a school in Hangzhou were weighed on Monday as they prepared for the Lunar New Year holidays.

If they put on more than two kilograms, they will be made to go out for a run every day during the new term, the Qianjiang Evening News reported.

Chen Kexiang, a student at the school said that most people used the holiday to eat a lot therefore it was going to be hard to avoid putting on weight, the South China Mornig Post reported.

Chen Kexiang pointed out that most people used the holiday period to eat a lot and took little exercise so it was going to be hard to avoid putting on weight.

The class’ teacher said: “I wanted the students weighing themselves before the holidays in order to give them awareness of the risk of putting on weight.”

The Lunar New Year is an important holiday in China and is a time with food one of the main elements.

It comes as China faces a growing obesity problem.

The move comes as students prepare for the Chinese New Year holidays (EPA)

According to the Telegraph, one in four children are expected to be overweight by 2030.

A report from Peking University’s School of Public Health found that 28 percent of seven to 18-year-olds will be classified as obese or overweight within the next 11 years.

The figure is a 43 percent increase from 2014 when 35 million children were classed as overweight.

The report also found that 49bn yuan (£5.5bn) is expected to be s pent on chronic diseases for obese and overweight adults by 2030.
