Popstar Gary Barlow surprised pupils when he visited to a school - by landing his helicopter during a game of rugby. Pupils and spectators on the playing fields of Truro School, Cornwall, were stunned to see the acclaimed singer touch down before their very eyes.
The star interrupted games between Truro School and Penryn College when the chopper landed on the pitch. The former Take That frontman, 51, then greeted excited onlookers before leaving for the latest date on his one-man show, A Different Stage, at the Hall for Cornwall.
A Truro School spokesperson said: "Players and spectators on the Truro School playing fields got a rather unexpected surprise. As acclaimed singer, songwriter, composer and producer, Gary Barlow landed his helicopter during a rugby match between Truro School and Penryn College.
"Gary greeted excited onlookers before heading off to the Hall for Cornwall to narrate the journey of his life alongside the music from his incredible discography. Our Operations Team were on hand to secure the area and support Gary safely to his onward journey."
The spokesperson added: "The school was given advance notice about the landing. But it was kept top secret with only the senior leadership team and operations manager knowing about it.
"Unfortunately he did not have time to speak to anyone but he threw them all a big smile and a lovely wave. The rugby matches were taking place on the pitches beside the one in which he landed. They only paused momentarily as the helicopter came down."
At the time of the landing last Thursday, four boys rugby matches between Truro School and Penryn College were taking place. They ranged from Under 15s to Under 12s.
One of the spectators who witnessed the landing wrote on social media: "I witnessed screaming, and that was just the mum's watching the rugby game. I felt for those poor boys because their whole support team disintegrated suddenly."
