Punters could be laid to rest at Cheltenham after the racecourse opens a special site for ashes.
A spot – or “niche” – at the columbarium wall would cost €5,600 and there will be space for 800 urns.
Each 17cm square niche will be engraved with the punter’s name and date of their death.
They will also allow an inurnment ceremony for friends and family.
But after 30 years, the ashes will be removed and then buried under the racecourse in a biodegradable urn.
It is being built by Spirit of Sport who declare they have “installed Columbarium walls in famous sporting venues” and is slated to be finished by May. On their website, Spirit of Sport said they “work with venue owners to provide Columbarium walls onsite at their stadium to hold the cremated ashes of their fans until they can eventually be laid to rest under the playing surface”.
They added: “The majority of people and sports fans in the world choose cremation. Most loyal sports fans feel the deepest connection with their stadium but are not allowed to scatter their ashes there.”
People will be able to reserve a niche for themselves or place the ashes of their family members that are currently in their homes in one.
Cheltenham members are being offered priority rights to purchase a niche from now until March 17.
After this, the wider racing community including racegoers, owners, trainers, and jockeys will be able to buy a niche.
In a promotional video about the Columbarium wall, Spirit of Sport said: “The spirits of the past live longer at Cheltenham.
“Don’t miss the opportunity to share in those memories. forever.”
