MOHALI: To decongest Zirakpur-Derabassi National Highway, including Airport Road, there is an urgent need to construct elevated roads, foot overbridges and service roads at critical intersections. This will ensure smooth flow of traffic and reduction of accidents.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has started construction of two flyovers passing through Zirakpur on the NH. The two flyovers will be constructed at a cost of Rs 48 crore, said NHAI project director Pardeep Attri.
These two flyovers will come up on two strategic locations, over Ghaggar River Bridge and from one side of Singhpura Chowk, to land before Zirakpur flyover. The project is likely to be completed in about a year and a half. Its completion will benefit people traveling between Zirakpur, Delhi and Chandigarh.
NHAI project director Pradeep Attri said that service lanes would be constructed on both sides before the project so that commuters do not face any inconvenience. Illegal constructions by builders on national highways will be removed. The culvert and drainage line will also be removed.
According to the vehicular survey, around 40,000 vehicles pass through this road daily, causing severe problems due to traffic jams from Ghaggar bridge to Zirakpur flyover. After construction of the two flyovers, traffic congestion will be eased to a great extent.
NHAI will take remedial measures to decongest Kharar-Derabassi highway, including the Airport Road.
Road safety experts committee advised construction of NH-22 crossing (from Mohali to Panchkula).
The present cut (at Dhillon Complex) is not aligned with the intersection to ensure smooth flow of traffic between the two. At present, there is a temporary diversion to regulate traffic.
The second elevated road is required at the intersection of PR-7 road with Zirakpur-Rajpura road at Chhat Village junction.
Experts have also suggested foot overbridges at Baltana Chowk and VIP Road. Railings are required to seal the carriageway. As this highway crosses through a high-density population area, pedestrian crossings are unavoidable and it is necessary to seal the carriageway while also providing foot over bridges, they said.
