Mumbai: Amid outrage over the rape of a Pune woman inside a parked bus, former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday recalled the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape case and asserted that laws alone can't prevent crimes against women; effective implementation is key to women's safety.
The Ex-CJI made the remarks on the sidelines of a programme in Mumbai.

"Laws made for women should be implemented properly. Women should feel safe wherever they go. It is important that in such cases, there should be proper investigation, strong action, quick trial and punishment. The legal system and the police have a big responsibility," DY Chandrachud said.
A man allegedly raped a 26-yera-old woman on a parked State transport bus (Shivshahi) at Pune’s Swargate bus depot on Tuesday (February 25, 2025), which caused a nationwide outrage with people seeking strict punishment against the culprit.
