Pundits predict 'messy' loss for Jesse Marsch's Leeds United at Liverpool

Leeds United will travel to Anfield this weekend to try and climb out of the relegation zone with three points against Liverpool as Jesse Marsch continues to face fan pressure over his role as manager.

The Whites are without a win since late August and have found themselves sliding down the Premier League table in recent weeks after disappointing result after disappointing result.

Liverpool haven't had their usual good start to their own season after last weekend's 1-0 loss to bottom-of-the-league Nottingham Forest and currently sit in 8th.

Here's what the pundits had to say this week about the clash between Liverpool and Leeds at Anfield on Saturday...

Paul Merson

The former Arsenal midfielder told SportsKeeda: "Liverpool pulled off a brilliant performance against Man City. They then endured a shocking result against Forest and went on to beat a good footballing team in Ajax.

"Jurgen Klopp must be pulling his hair out. Liverpool have been very consistent under him in recent years, but they've been up and down this season.

"Fabinho has played a lot of matches this season. I do like him, and I'm not sure what the problem is there. If Liverpool are to be a success, they need him at their best. A lot of what he does goes unnoticed. If you've watched Liverpool over the years, you'll know that the midfield three made everything happen. They're struggling without a settled midfield.

"Darwin Nunez has been a bit stop-start this season, but I think he'll be a success. My only worry is his link-up play - he didn't even see Mohamed Salah's run against Man City and when you play for a team like Liverpool, you need to be able to pick those passes.

"What I do like about him is that he doesn't shy off. He missed a sitter the other day, but he still scored after that. It might take him some time, but he'll come good for Liverpool.

"Leeds are struggling, aren’t they? I like Jesse Marsch and I think he works hard, but Leeds keep shooting themselves in the foot. I expect Liverpool to win this game comfortably."

Merson's prediction: Liverpool 3-0 Leeds United

Chris Sutton

Sutton told BBC Sport: "I don't think Leeds' poor form is all on Jesse Marsch, and I think it is harsh that the fans have turned on him as quickly as they have done, but they really need a positive result at Anfield.

"Liverpool have been a 'Jekyll and Hyde' side all season and I keep getting them wrong - after they beat Manchester City and West Ham, going to bottom-side Nottingham Forest felt like an open goal for them, but they did not turn up.

"They are at home this time, though, and they put in a really strong performance at Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday.

"So, again, I am going to say the Reds will win comfortably and find the spark they have been missing for months. If they do, then things could get messy for Marsch and his side, because their defence is a real cause for concern.

Sutton's prediction: Liverpool 6-1 Leeds

Mark Lawrenson

In his column for Paddy Power, Lawrenson wrote: "The problem with Leeds is that they are competitive, they’re just lacking a bit of guile.

"Patrick Bamford is only going to get match fit by playing games and he’s the best finisher they’ve got. Liverpool had a great result in the Champions League but they are down to the bare bones a little bit.

"I think they’ll bounce back from that Nottingham Forest game, though."

Lawrenson's prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Leeds.
