Leeds United suffered yet another injury blow in the defeat against Leicester City as Tyler Roberts has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Roberts picked up the injury just minutes after coming off the bench during an unusual incident with Foxes defender Daniel Amartey, which has forced him to undergo surgery on a ruptured hamstring tendon.
The 23-year-old stayed on the field of play for the remainder of the match despite the injury, which could have aggravated the blow for Roberts.
The Wales international has struggled for form and regular starts during Leeds’ time in the Premier League.
He has scored just two goals and registered only three assists in 50 appearances for the Whites since promotion, much to the frustration of some sections of supporters.
Roberts has struggled to nail down a position in the Leeds starting XI, sometimes appearing as a number 10, and on other occasions leading the line.
One pundit, former Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor, believes he may have played his last game in the Premier League for a while due to the injury.
Speaking to Football Insider, he claimed that Roberts has proven he is not quite ready for the top-flight and expects him to be playing in the Championship next season, regardless of where Leeds end up this term.
“First of all, it’s a shame with his injury," he said.
“But he’s not a Premier League player. Sometimes when you come to the big league you find your level and the Premier League is not his level.
“I’m sure next season he’ll be in the Championship.”
