There are fears a ‘public nuisance’ could be created if a Knowsley shop is allowed to sell alcohol for longer.
Environmental health officers for Knowsley Council made the remarks after an application was made to extend hours that Mackets Lane Mini Market in Halewood can sell alcohol.
The shop is currently allowed to sell alcohol between 8am and 10pm. According to an application submitted to the council’s licensing committee, the owner wants to sell alcohol up until midnight seven days a week, as well as up to 1am on bank holidays, Christmas Eve and New Years’ Eve.

The applicant said in support of its the request that the shop is a “well established business” looking to develop further while retaining its “benefit to the community” as a convenience store.
Responding to the application, however, an environmental health officer for Knowsley Council said there were concerns at the impact the late night alcohol sales could have on the local area.
In particular, in comments submitted to the licensing committee, the environmental health officer stated: “We have concerns with the proposed change in hours and the potential for the extended hours to lead to a public nuisance.
“Granting of the hours they are requesting in the application is, in our opinion, likely to lead to a public nuisance which will have an impact on the residents living in that area, especially those living above the shops in that row.”
The officer added: “The noise from these customers visiting the shop, and their vehicles, especially after 11pm is likely to cause problems.”
The council’s licensing committee will meet next Wednesday ,September 28 to discuss the application and whether to allow the convenience store to extend its hours or not.
