Public Health Scotland confirm 8,275 new Covid cases as infection rates updated across nation

A further 8,275 Covid cases have been confirmed in Scotland within the last 24 hours.

Figures have been published by the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland (PHS) this afternoon as part of the national Covid-19 daily briefing.

Nationally, there are 1,319 patients with the disease being treated in hospital which is a chunky reduction of 70 from yesterday's reported figure. There are currently 30 people being treated in ICUs.

The number of newly-reported positive coronavirus cases recorded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran has increased by 231. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 79,865 positive PCR tests in the region and 1,135,991 million across Scotland.

Of the new cases reported, 82 were in North Ayrshire, 78 attributed to East Ayrshire and 71 in South Ayrshire.

According to Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, Aberdeen City has the highest rate in the country – at 580.2 as of Wednesday, January 26.

Falkirk has the second-highest infection rate at 577.4 while Fife is third with 574.4.

In terms of Ayrshire's thee local authorities, South Ayrshire has the highest rate of 459.2; East Ayrshire's rate stands at 449.8 while North Ayrshire's is 406.0.

A total of 20 of Scotland's 32 council regions have an infection rate below the national average of 474.4.

Another 20 deaths mean 10,275 people have passed away since March 2020.

However, data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) shows 12,823 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, January 23 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate.

Across the UK, the figure is 154,702 as of last night and 176,813 with Covid mentioned on the death certificate.

There are 106 patients with the disease being treated in Ayrshire hospitals, down six from yesterday, and fewer than five people in ICUs.

Nationally, a total of 4,408,534 people have received one dose of a Covid vaccine; 4,117,631 are double jabbed and 3,274,918 people have received a third dose/booster.
