Pub pleads with customers to stop bringing in food and drink from the Co-Op next door

A Cheshire pub is pleading with customers to stop bringing in their own food and drink after spotting a "growing trend" of people sneaking in their own supplies. The Eight Farmers pub in Leighton, Crewe issued a lengthy statement on their Facebook page saying that people "purchasing drinks from the Co-Op or brought from home" are not helping with their own rising costs.

The pub is popular with families as it boasts a large outdoor play area and bouncy castle in the summer months and is right next to a Co-Op convenience store. Bosses say it's unfair for people to use the pub facilities, but then bring in their own drinks instead of buying the pub's food and drink offering.

The statement, which was titled "polite notice" asked for customer's assistance in the matter. But added that anyone found flouting their policy from now on will be "asked to leave".

The Facebook post included a picture with a "No food from elsewhere" sign on it, reports Cheshire Live. The post said: "It seems to be a growing trend that people believe that they can come and use our facilities while bringing food and drink in from elsewhere.

"Unfortunately it seems that we will have to remind people that we are a business, whilst we do empathise that living costs have increased and that it is the summer holidays, unfortunately our costs have risen too.

"We have continued to provide bouncy castles and the playpark for families despite the fact that our energy bills are in the region of £40,000 per year…. Pubs are not exempt from the rises and purchasing drinks from the Co-Op or brought from home do not help towards the cost of running and maintaining our facilities.

"Anybody found bringing in drinks or food from elsewhere will be asked to leave. Thank you."

Customers were supportive of the post and said they couldn't believe how rude customers could be taking in their own supplies. Gill Fradley said: "I can’t believe the cheek of people! Well said Eight Farmers x"

Douglas Crum added: "That's fair. Can't complain about that, though there are some who will." Grant Coiley said: "You either ask, or you don’t do simple. But then again a pub that serves food you just don’t do it too anyway."

The pub is based on Parkers Road in Leighton, a suburb of Crewe best known as the location of South Cheshire's main medical complex Leighton Hospital.
