Pub owner tells 'horrible' diner to go to McDonald's after 'awful' Tripadvisor review

The owner of a popular pub has suggested a diner should have visited McDonald's instead of his award-winning boozer after they left a terrible review on Tripadvisor.

The customer described their visit to The Bulls Head in Solihull, West Midlands as "awful" and claimed they were served "Tesco chips and Farmfoods fish". They added it was the "poorest meal, ambiance, staff personality experienced in a long time".

Responding to the Tripadvisor review, made in February this year, the owner of the popular pub described the comments as "horrible" and said "maybe next time McDonald’s would be a better option for your night out", reports Birmingham Live.

The negative review, headlined 'poor', reads: "Visited this pub as were told it had been refurbed with new ownership and food was good. Trust me we haven't been to this place for 25 years, last time was when Brad ran the place.

"Whoever owns it now needs to sell up and move on. Poorest meal, ambiance, staff personality experienced in a long time. Arrived at 6.50pm and back home at 7.50pm!

"Set menu Valentine meal only option. Alternative was fish and chips plus a couple of pie options. Selected fish and chips. Well, the chef provided Tesco's fries from the freezer along with what I believe to be Farmfoods fish!

"Will be at least another 25 years before revisiting! Awful!!!"

The reviewer gave The Bulls Head a score of one out of five - the worst possible - which equates to 'terrible' on Tripadvisor.

The owner of The Bulls Head, identified as Nick on Tripadvisor, decided to respond to the review - and he didn't hold back. His response said: "What a horrible review. We are a country pub with real open fires cask ales and a busy small restaurant.

"The atmosphere has always been commented on how lovely it is to still be a traditional country pub. (Unfortunately we don't offer in house entertainment).

"The fish and chips you refer to as Tesco chips ( which they are not) amazes me how you cleared both your plates while you sat in silence. The fish you ate with no complaints to our staff, comes direct from the sea and spends less than 24 hours on dry land before being served on your plate. The fish has never visited Farmfoods.

"We had on offer on your visit eight different main courses from steak, pies and fish. Not sure what you would have wanted.

"Thanks for the advice to sell up and move on but as we have just got through the worst two years in trading history with Covid I think we are here to stay a little longer. Maybe next time McDonald’s would be a better option for your night out."

The Bull's Head in the Barston area of Solihull has a 4.5 rating on Tripadvisor - with more than 250 reviews. It is is also included in the top 15 restaurants in Solihull, according to the travel website, and also picked up a Travellers' Choice Award in 2021.

The pub has 251 reviews on Tripadvisor - of which 208 are rated as 'excellent' or 'very good'. One recent reviewer said it was "simply amazing food". While another described it as an "outstanding gem of a real English country pub".
