Pub evacuated as smoke comes from cellar

Emergency services rushed to a pub after smoke was seen coming from the cellar.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 8.11pm on Thursday, December 29, following reports of a fire at the Angelsea Pub on Beresford Road in Dingle. Six minutes later two fire engines arrived on the road and the pub was evacuated.

Two firefighters entered the cellar of the pub, where smoke was coming from, and found a faulty light fitting which had caught fire. The blaze was put out with a CO2 extinguisher and the gas and electric to the pub was isolated.

Firefighters checked for any fire spread, fitted smoke alarms and ventilated the cellar before leaving the pub at 9.18pm.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire crews were called to a small fire in the Angelsea pub, Beresford Road, L9, this evening. Two fire engines were in attendance.

"Crews arrived and two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the cellar of the pub to investigate the source of smoke. The pub was evacuated and gas and electric to the property was isolated.

"The source of the smoke was found to be a faulty light fitting which was extinguished with a CO2 extinguisher. Firefighters checked for any fire spread, fitted smoke alarms and ventilated the cellar before leaving the scene at 9.18pm."
