PSV Eindhoven have admitted they may not be able to keep talented winger Cody Gakpo at the club for many more transfer windows amid reported interest from Manchester City.
Gakpo emerged as a reported City target, as well as being linked with Liverpool, towards the end of the January transfer window, but both sides ended up signing other forwards instead. City added Julian Alvarez from River Plate, who will join the club next season, while Liverpool have signed Porto's Luis Diaz.
That is unlikely to stop the links to Gakpo, though, with PSV director John de Jong admitting there was interest from 'the big clubs in Europe' for their 22-year-old winger.
De Jong also suggested the Eredivisie side may not be able to keep Gakpo for much longer if those big clubs return to sign him in the future.
He told PSV TV: “The interest started early in the season, when he performed well, also with the Dutch national team.
“My goal is to keep him for the season at all times. I don’t know how long we can keep him out of the hands of the big clubs in Europe. How he performs is the most important thing.
“That [his new contract] says a lot. A nice signal to players in the academy and in this group.
“The path that he goes through from youth player to important base player, to the second captain is beautiful. An example.”
Gakpo has an impressive 31 goals and 29 assists in 116 senior appearances for PSV, averaging a goal contribution every 117 minutes, and he has four caps for the Netherlands, scoring once and assisting once.
