PSV chief executive officer Marcel Brands has addressed the details regarding Leeds United’s bid for Dutch winger Cody Gakpo on transfer deadline day.
It was reported that Leeds had tabled a €43million bid for Gakpo but Brands has insisted that €13million was made up of bonuses, most of which were unacceptable.
“It was thirty million plus thirteen, with two million [of the] bonuses realistic,” Brands told Voetbal International. "For example, we would get six million if they made it to the Champions League. This was the best offer and we all said no to that.
"I can say with my hand on my heart that there has been no offer for Cody to which the management or the supervisory board have said: we must do this.

"There has never been a vote, I read that everywhere. We did state that if there were certain offers, we had to sell. Not only from a financial point of view, but also because agreements were made with the camp before my time.”
Technical director John de Jong left his post at PSV after it was revealed his contract had been terminated. Brands has strongly disputed that the transfer window was the basis for his departure from the club.
Gakpo remained at PSV despite also receiving interest from a number of Leeds’ rivals, including Manchester United, Southampton and Arsenal. The 23-year-old has started the season in impressive form – scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists in 13 appearances across all competitions.
