PSNI plea as Northern Ireland hit by 'terrible' snow

Police have appealed for people to stay home to stay safe during the "terrible weather" currently blasting Northern Ireland. The Police Service of Northern Ireland says that officers are doing what they can as the freezing blast from the Arctic causes major travel problems, but they have urged people to stay home unless their journey is "absolutely necessary".

An Amber Level snow and ice warning for counties Antrim, Armagh, and Down is in place for the early hours of this morning (Friday March 10), with the Met Office warning of disruption to travel and impact on infrastructure, while a Yellow snow warning is in place until 2pm across Northern Ireland.

The PSNI said: "Before travelling on the roads today please consider if your journey is absolutely necessary. If you must travel, please take extra care, plan for delays.

"Before travelling, clear your vehicle of ice and snow and ensure you have enough fuel for your journey. Ensure that all lights and wipers are working, and that you have screenwash topped up.

"When driving, slow down, leave extra room between you and the vehicle in front. Use your headlights and wipers. If you have a mobile phone, make sure it’s fully charged. Please also listen to and consider all travel and safety advice before making any journey. If you don't need to travel then please stay at home and enjoy looking out at it."

Dozens of homes in Northern Ireland were left without power last night (Thursday March 10), while in the south snow fell heavily in some parts, with buses and lorries seen skidding off road in some areas. Hundreds of people in Cork were also cut off from power supplies.

The Met Office has warned of further “significant disruption” to transport and power supplies as the bad weather, prompted by Storm Larisa, will continue into today (Friday March 10).
