PSNI make safe World War Two ammunition found in Mournes

Police made a World War Two artillery shell safe in part of Co Down on Tuesday.

Officers attended the Leitrim Road in Kilkeel on January 10 after a member of the public made officers aware of the object.

The device was found on land in the Mourne Mountains close to the Leitrim Road car park.

It was then made safe by Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO).

Describing the incident further, Inspector Steven Weatherald said: “We’d like to thank the member of the public who made us aware of this historic piece of munition so we, in assistance with other agencies, were able to take steps to make it safe.

“We’d also like to remind others walking in the Mournes or other areas who may come across anything of this nature to always report these suspicious devices and never touch the item. Keeping people safe is paramount.”
