PSNI appeal for witnesses after 'arson attack' on community centre in Derry

Police in Derry are appealing for information after a community facility reported that they had been victims of an arson attack.

It comes after a community organisation in the Creggan area of the city vowed to carry on their work after the front of its building suffered fire damage on Thursday.

It's understood at around 6.20am on December 22 a black wheelie bin had been placed against the window of a property in the Central Drive area and was set alight.

In a statement, the PSNI said that the incident was reported to them at around 4:20pm. They added: “Scorch damage was caused to the window frame and the wall.

“Our enquiries are at an early stage and I would ask that anyone with information contact us on 101 quoting reference RM22081213.”

Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Emma McGinley, said the attack was "a disgrace".

She said: "The team at the Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership do brilliant work for the community in Creggan, and the last thing they need is such vandalism damaging their facilities, especially in the week of Christmas.

"Those responsible should consider their actions and the negative impact it has on the local community."
