PSG Offer Medical Update After Donnarumma's Horrific Injury

Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have confirmed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma will have to remain inactive for several days to recover from the facial injuries he suffered against AS Monaco.

French powerhouse PSG made the trip to Stade Louis-II for their Ligue 1 Matchday 16 appointment with Monaco on Wednesday night, 18th December. Luis Enrique’s side enjoyed a decent start, with Monaco failing to put too much pressure on Donnarumma in the opening minutes.

However, the lull did not last long, as a 17th-minute goalscoring opportunity for the hosts ended in disaster for the Italian goalkeeper. Breel Embolo found Wilfried Singo with a long ball, and the right-back did his best to get to it before Donnarumma. The former AC Milan star came out on top, blocking the defender, but it came at a massive cost, as he ended up suffering horrific facial injuries.

Singo pushed the ball onto the PSG goalkeeper’s chest before raising his boot and catching the Italian’s face with his studs showing. The medical staff immediately intervened and brought him off in the 22nd minute.

Donnarumma suffered several cuts on his face and needed to be fitted with staples. He also got a severe black eye in the aftermath of the incident.

PSG Issues Injury Update on Gianluigi Donnarumma

Ligue 1 leaders PSG have issued a medical bulletin on Donnarumma via their official website.

The statement read:

Victim of facial trauma with multiple wounds, Gianluigi Donnarumma will return to Paris with the team. He will undergo medical examinations and will have to remain inactive for several days.”

PSG will return to action with a Round of 64 clash with Lens in the Coupe de France on 22nd December. Naturally, Donnarumma will not participate in that game. Considering the severity of his injury, it is unclear whether he will be fit for the Trophee des Champions final against Monaco on 5th January as well.

Donnarumma, 25, has played 130 games for Les Parisiens in all competitions since joining them in the summer of 2021. The talented goalkeeper has kept 44 clean sheets and conceded 128 goals, helping the club to three Ligue 1 titles. The 2020 European Champions will see his PSG deal expire on June 30, 2026.
