PS Portal can now stream classic PS1 and PS2 games from PS Plus

The PlayStation Portal no longer requires a PS5 to play games, and Sony is beefing up the library of titles the handheld can stream from PS Plus.

Alongside the 120 cloud streaming games already available to players, you can now also play a selection of classic PS1 and PSP games over the internet.

The line-up includes Ape Escape, which is set to make a cameo in Metal Gear Solid Delta, Tekken, The Legend of Dragoon, Killzone Liberation and more.

All you need to start gaming, aside from the PS Portal itself, is a PS Plus Premium subscription, which costs £13.49 per month.

Is the PS Portal worth it?

When it launched in 2023, the PlayStation Portal was essentially a PS5 companion device, letting players stream their own PS4 and PS5 games via Remote Play. Since the same feature was already available on phones and laptops, many questioned why the gadget even existed.

But Sony’s PS Portal cloud streaming update changed all that. By allowing players to access a growing library of PlayStation Plus games (no console required), it finally gave the gadget a purpose beyond being a £200 second screen.

How to set up PS Portal cloud streaming

Although it’s been around for a few months, the PS Portal cloud streaming perk is still in beta.

As such, it’s still a work in progress: you can’t play Game Trials or use Party Voice chat, among other minor functions – but that shouldn’t get in the way of a gaming sesh.

However, to start streaming games from PS Plus, you will have to switch the feature on by following these steps:
