Proud Mary pub confirmed for Swansea on site of former Idols club in Wind Street

A "party pub" will be taking over the site of the former Idols nightclub in Swansea's Wind Street as it opens its second UK venue. Scandinavian pub and club operator Rekom, which owns Swansea's Fiction nightclub and new sports bar Wingers among its long list of UK venues, has confirmed it is now leasing the former Idols nightclub unit in Swansea city centre and will be turning it into a Proud Mary pub.

The news comes a year after it was announced that Swansea Marina-based gin bar Gin Ne Sais Quoi was going to take on the former Idols unit with an aim to open it as their second venue in time for Beaujolais Day in November 2021. It's understood those plans fell through in late 2021.

Now the huge nightclub-bar unit is being redeveloped into a quirky pub with lots of tables and bench-style seating. It's understood management are aiming to open the new pub in early 2023. For more news on new food and drink venues opening in Wales, go here.

Proud Mary Swansea is set to be the UK's second branch of the pub with the first set to open in Cardiff at the end of this month.

Confirming an opening date of October 29 for the Cardiff venue, which will serve food and host live music at weekends, a Rekom spokesman said: "The Cardiff venue will operate over two floors and will have a huge 950-people capacity. There will be a dozen TV screens showing key sporting events and guests will also be able to reserve VIP booths with their own TV screens and table service too. "There are currently six Proud Mary Pubs in Denmark, Finland, and Norway, with Cardiff being the first in the UK and the former Idols club, Wind Street, Swansea will be the second due to open early 2023."
