Proud dad, 28, with good heart 'dedicated his life' to his kids before sudden death

A proud dad "dedicated" his life to his kids before his tragic sudden death, an inquest heard.

Rean Anthony Christie was 28 when he died at his home on Montrose Road on April 18, 2022. On Tuesday, July 5, an inquest was held into his death by Senior Coroner André Rebello at the Gerard Majella Courthouse.

The hearing heard how on the morning of April 18, Mr Christie, originally born in London, was found hanging. Explaining to the family, Mr Rebello said: "I'm satisfied Rean died from cardiac arrest."

Toxicology results showed that alcohol had been taken with cocaine, described as a "dangerous and unpredictable drug". Mr Rebello said: "People take cocaine because it makes them feel better, it raises the mood, however that is very short lived. What often follows is a much deeper depression than the person had.

"People can be enabled to do something they wouldn't normally have done. It may well be Rean put himself in this fatal position in part because he's taken this drug."

The coroner went on to say the "only explanation" was that he "thought of bringing his life to an end" but added "that thought could be fleeting". The hearing heard how you "only have to put yourself in that position for a second for death to occur."

Recording a cause of death as suicide by hanging, Mr Rebello added in that Mr Christie died by reflex cardiac arrest, telling the family he "may not have had fatal intent." He said: "The more you love someone, the more it actually hurts when you're separated."

He went on to say you "never expect them to die before us" but it was "even more important to appreciate the beauty of their life, to celebrate that life."

The coroner told the family: "A wound has been caused by the loss. When you love someone, you become part of each other. When someone is wrenched away, that gaping wound needs to heal.

"Bereavement is not something you can read in a book... it's a roller coaster of emotions."

Rean was previously described as a "brilliant" dad who had a "good heart" after his close friend Billy Thompson paid a moving tribute to him. He told the ECHO: "I've known him for about seven years and he's always been backwards and forwards with me but he was just a really nice lad.

"He would do anything for you. I remember him coming to the shop with his babies and he was always dead proud. He really wanted to do well. Everything he put his hand to he would always try his best."
