India’s wrestling chief is coming under renewed pressure to resign after it was alleged by at least ten women they had been sexually exploited by him.

Vinesh Phogat, one of the country’s top wrestlers, has called out Brij Bhushan Singh, chief of Wrestling Federation of India, during a protest on Wednesday in New Delhi.

The 28-year-old athlete said she and other competitors would not take part in international tournaments unless he was removed from his post.

Mr Singh, who is also an MP, has denied all accusations and refused to stand down - saying there is “no truth to the allegations”. He added that “only Vinesh” has made the accusations and that he “could be hanged” if others come forward.

Ms Phogat, who has won medals at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, said their stand will continue until the government addresses their concerns.

The protest on Wednesday was held at Jantar Mantar heritage site.

Ms Phogat said: “[Coaches have been] sexually harassing women wrestlers for years.

“They trouble us too much. They get into our personal lives and relationships."

She added: "Singh is also involved in sexual harassment. I know at least 10-12 women wrestlers who have told me about the sexual exploitation they faced at the hands of the WFI president."

India has cancelled its national wrestling camp this week in wake of the protests.
