Protest march to take place in Lanarkshire town as cost of living crisis deepens

Lanarkshire trade unions members, community groups, and campaigners will assemble on Saturday morning to protest against the rising cost of living.

A march and demonstration has been organised by North Lanarkshire Trade Union Council (NL TUC) to send the message, ‘enough is enough’ to politicians.

The day of action on December 3 is in response to the rising cost of living.

Protestors are set to gather at the Duchess Park, just off Avon Street in the town, at 11am and will set off on a march through the town to the Civic Centre, headquarters of North Lanarkshire Council.

There will then be a static demo on arrival with speakers from a number of trade unions in Lanarkshire

Davie Hainey, secretary of North Lanarkshire TUC, told Lanarkshire Live: “Whilst workers’ pay is frozen and millions are hit with real terms pay cuts as inflation hits record levels.

"We need as many local organisations and individuals as we can muster to join us on the day, to support the cause of striking workers and people in North Lanarkshire who are facing a winter of obscene fuel poverty, hunger and austerity 2.0.

“The trade unions, community groups and wider community are taking part in this.

"Workers and the working class are facing so many struggles at the minute. It’s aimed at both the UK and Scottish governments, and the council. The cuts are coming at all levels, and thick and fast.

“We are seeing some fights being won in terms of pay rises for workers, but it seems there’s a long way to go for a lot of other people.

“Everyone is suffering, and as a trade union official myself I have people coming to me now most days telling me how they are struggling, not just financially but mentally as well with the pressure of it all.

"Who would have thought we’d be living through times like this?”
