Authorities have blocked a planned demonstration against restrictions on public protests in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk.
The March 25th protest was intended to challenge limitations on public gatherings, but Krasnoyarsk City Hall rejected the request, stating that public events are not permitted due to wartime conditions declared by President Vladimir Putin.
Regional lawmaker Alexei Boykov, who submitted the protest request, condemned the decision as unconstitutional, The Moscow Times reported.
"Conducting a special military operation cannot be a reason for this refusal on its own," he wrote on Telegram, accusing local authorities of hypocrisy for organizing their own public events while blocking opposition gatherings.
A member of the far-right Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR), Boykov originally filed the request on behalf of animal rights activists, who were denied permission to protest a federal bill allowing the euthanasia of stray dogs. That protest was blocked under Covid-19 restrictions.
"I consider this answer to be another insult and mockery of the law," said Boykov, who has asked prosecutors to review the legality of the ban.
