Protecting the manta ray

A highly intelligent marine giant, manta rays gracefully glide and do somersaults in the deep ocean. However the large species is highly threatened, particularly by commercial fishing for their meat and gill plates.

Panerai and Razer have announced a partnership to support Conservation International's research on marine species, in satellite tagging manta rays to gather data -- including temperature, depth, and location -- which when paired with other information, can be used to promote conservation management of the creatures and their habitat.

The manta ray programme is led by world-renowned coral reef ecologist and marine conservationist Mark Erdmann, who said: "The data from our ongoing research on manta rays has led to the development of sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities, supported the creation of new protected areas, and informed policy changes that protect these species and their ocean environment."

Saving the planet, particularly its oceans, is important to Panerai, which has partnered with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of Unesco to develop ocean literacy activities as part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

The new partnership with Razer and Conservation International demonstrates the luxury brand's 360-degree approach to improving the marine environment.

"The project convincingly shows that safeguarding ocean wildlife isn't a zero-sum game. Instead, protecting the manta rays supports a healthy ecosystem, including the people who are part of it," said CEO Jean Marc Pontroué.

A leading lifestyle brand for gamers, Razer has designed and built the world's largest gamer-focused ecosystem of hardware, software and services. Its triple-headed snake trademark is one of the most recognized logos in the global gaming and e-sports communities.

Last year, the company launched its 10-year #GoGreenWithRazer programme, engaging its gaming community in activities to protect nature and preserve the environment.

In the near future, Panerai will unveil a limited-edition watch made with recycled materials and bearing Razer's signature aesthetics.
