The prospect of a new shop in Wallsend has divided neighbours' opinions.
The site south of Moor Drive, forming part of the East Benton Persimmon Homes development, could soon be home to a "convenience retail store" if North Tyneside councillors approve the plans next week.
The proposals have generated a mix of public outcry and support in almost equal measure.

A total of 20 residents have opposed the new shop on the grounds of traffic concerns, noise and parking. However, 15 residents have publicly announced their support on the local authority's website, stating a shop would be beneficial and convenient for residents, particularly the elderly.
One supportive resident commented: "As someone who doesn't have access to a car a lot of the time, a shop within easy walking distance of the house would be absolutely ideal.
"We frequently run into problems just getting simple household items without driving to ASDA and back for 2-3 things late at night (my wife works very varied shifts). This would not only save us time but mean we're using the car less for things I'd happily just walk to buy."
However, a detractor on the same planning portal stated: "This would negatively impact the lives of many residents living directly opposite the proposed building. There would be increased noise levels with delivery vans as well as additional cars accessing the site."
Another claimed: "I am shocked at this proposal - a retail unit in such close proximity to our homes. The traffic congestion is already terrible. We all worked hard to save and purchase our home on what was supposed to be a relatively tranquil and new build community estate."
However, a planning statement from BH Planning & Design, on behalf of the applicant VB Benton Ltd, concludes: "The scheme demonstrates how detailed design considerations would ensure that a wholly sustainable development would be delivered which meets the requirements of both national and local planning policy. It has also been informed by extensive discussions with the Local Planning Authority during the outline stage."
Councillors are set to hear the application in the council's Cobalt HQ on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.
