A planning consultation has been launched as plans for 87 affordable flats are due to be submitted to Cardiff Council "imminently". The proposals would see buildings in Cowbridge Road East and Lower Cathedral Road demolished to make way for the development, LRM planning has said.
The site, just 400m from the city centre, is currently occupied by three-storey dwellings and commercial units along Cowbridge Road East. The proposed development would consist entirely of 87 one-bedroom affordable apartments.
Additionally a ground-floor commercial unit, amenity space for residents, and cycle parking would form part of the plans for the development. The development would consist of seven floors in Cowbridge Road East, the upper six of which would serve as apartments.

The intention for the proposal is to "create a high-quality development of much-needed affordable housing in an extraordinarily sustainable location", according to the design and access statement including in the consultation. The proposals would see the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of blocks ranging in height from four to seven storeys.
Earlier pre-application proposals have seen proposals for the height of the building reduced from 11 storeys and 150 units to the currently proposed seven storeys with 86 units. The proposed design also includes roof gardens with communal gardening and play areas and seating.
Car parking for the site is not proposed and space for bicycle storage would be on the ground floor. The proposals have not yet been submitted to Cardiff Council but LRM Planning says that a full application is to be submitted imminently. The deadline for comments on the application is Friday, October 28.
