Property expert's quick £10 fix to draft-proof windows could save you a fortune

With more cold weather on the way, Brits looking to weather-proof their homes could not have picked a better time. If your home is not energy-efficient, you could be losing heat and money every time you warm up your home. Luckily, there's a simple trick everyone can make use of - draft-proofing your windows. While this step is often forgotten by some, it is well worth considering according to the pros, who reckon it is a game-changer.

"Draught-proofing your windows can help to keep the heat in and, therefore, results in your home being more energy efficient," said Property Expert Michael Reading of Housetastic.co.uk.

In collaboration with ConservatoryLand, the expert has shared how homeowners can do this fairly cheaply.

He said: "You can easily draught proof your home with draught proofing strips. Make sure you choose strips that are the right size so they fit in the gap in your window. If the strip is too small, there will still be a gap so it won’t be completely effective and if the strip is too big, it will get crushed and you may struggle to close the window. If your windows don’t open, you will need to use a silicone sealant."

Available from Screwfix for £12.09 (20m) or from Amazon for £9.99 (8m), the hack shouldn't break the bank either, but it could save you a fortune.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror last year, home heating expert and LoftZone CEO, Dave Raval said homeowners could save £250 by draught-proofing their house amid rising energy costs.

He explained: "The best energy saving is the energy you don't use, so finding spots where heat may be escaping is key. A quarter of a house's heat is lost by draughts leaking through doors and windows, so it's vital to find those gaps and plug them efficiently."

"With the rising costs, you can easily see why draught-proofing your home would be an effective method of helping you to save up to £250 per year off your energy bills," the expert added.

He also recommended a DIY approach if you're looking to safeguard your home for less when he shared his top tips for preventing draughts.
