Houses, sheds and cars destroyed, multiple firefighters require treatment in Millmerran bushfire

Two houses, several sheds and cars have been destroyed by a bushfire on Queensland's Darling Downs.

The blaze at Millmerran, west of Toowoomba, has burned through about 400 hectares of land.

Crews were called to Cabbage Gum Road about 2pm yesterday, but the fire quickly spread.

On Tuesday afternoon the fire was downgraded to Advice alert level.

"Conditions could get worse quickly," Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) said with residents being advised to prepare to leave.

"Some properties are currently under threat."

QFES Superintendent Wayne Waltisbuhl said at least two homes have been destroyed.

"We can confirm two structural losses and a caravan and we're progressively working our way through the fire to see if there's any more damage that's been done," he said.

"Nobody's been injured – that's a really important thing."

But conditions did hamper fighting efforts.

"Yesterday we had some firefighters with heat exhaustion," he said.

"Today the fire is now contained and we're working on mopping up and having full extinguishment of that fire."

Superintendent Waltisbuhl said it was a credit to the crews who worked over night to get containment lines around the fire using bulldozers and front-end loaders.

Aircraft to support ground crews

He said crews were working to access more properties to assess the damage.

"One of the problems that firefighters faced in this particular area is getting access into properties to do property protection," he said.

"Access to the properties that were potentially damaged was our biggest issue yesterday, so a message to residents that live in bushland areas they need to make sure that they have good access for our trucks to get into their properties and defendable space around our assets so we can help defend them."

The blaze is within containment lines and reinforcement crews are on the way, Superintendent Waltisbuhl said.

"There's an awful lot of work to do today. There's still a lot of active fire within those containment lines," he said.

"We've got some extra crews coming in from south-east region to support the locals over the next couple of days to put this thing well and truly out.

"We've got aircraft to support the ground crews again today."
