The body of prominent Syrian activist Mazen al-Hamada was discovered in a hospital in Damascus, as confirmed by his niece Joud al-Hamada on Facebook. According to Joud's post, Mazen's body had been at the Harasta Hospital for a week before being identified.
Joud expressed her sorrow in the post, lamenting the passing of her beloved uncle and bidding him farewell with heartfelt words. Mazen al-Hamada was a prominent figure in the Syrian protests during the Arab Spring of 2011. Following his involvement in the demonstrations, he sought refuge in the Netherlands, where he testified about the torture he endured at the hands of Assad's regime for nearly two years.
Tragically, Mazen was arrested in February 2020 upon his return to Syria at Damascus airport and had been missing since then. His untimely death has shocked and saddened many who knew him and admired his courage in standing up for justice and human rights.
